How much life insurance do you need?

A calculator tool and the logic behind its inputs: how many years of income to replace, major debts, education costs, and existing resources.

A simple approach: estimate what your salary would provide over the years until your dependents are independent, then subtract savings and any existing coverage. The math doesn't need to be exact; term policies are sold in round-number increments anyway, and the aim is a figure that keeps your household stable through the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Quick formula: (annual income × years) + outstanding debts + expected education costs − current savings and coverage, then round to the nearest $5,000. This gives you a ballpark figure; it is not personalized financial advice.

Why those inputs

Income years. Financial advisors typically recommend ten to twenty years of income replacement; the exact amount depends on how many years your dependents would need financial support. A family with young children in Menifee often picks the higher end of that range because in the early years, childcare, housing, and education costs all tend to be high at the same time.

Debts. For most families, the mortgage is the biggest obligation. Life insurance coverage that would pay off the mortgage gives your family the freedom to decide their own future instead of being forced by financial pressure.

Education. Budget a rough per-child amount in today's dollars. It is simpler to account for college costs now than to purchase a second policy down the line.

What you have. Liquid savings and any group life insurance provided by an employer. Employer group coverage typically ends if you leave that job, so many people include only a fraction of it when calculating.

Once you know how much coverage you need, the quote tool displays the cost of that amount across carriers and term lengths from 10 to 30 years. Many people choose slightly more coverage than the minimum because the monthly premium increase is often modest when you're younger.
